What Is POTS?
POTS is a condition in which the heart rate increases abnormally when moving from lying down to standing. This happens because the autonomic nervous system is not properly coordinating blood flow, heart rate, and vascular tone.
Instead of efficiently adjusting to upright
posture, the nervous system overreacts, leading to symptoms that can feel overwhelming and unpredictable.
POTS is often associated with:
- Autonomic nervous system dysregulation
- Poor brain to body communication
- Vestibular and balance system involvement
- Post viral or post concussion changes
- Chronic stress or neurological fatigue
Common Symptoms of POTS
People with POTS may experience a wide range of symptoms, including:
- Rapid heart rate when standing
- Lightheadedness or dizziness
- Fainting or near fainting episodes
- Fatigue and exercise intolerance
- Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
- Headaches or migraines
- Palpitations
- Shortness of breath
- Nausea
- Temperature intolerance
- Anxiety or feeling overstimulated
- Weakness or shakiness
Symptoms often worsen with standing, prolonged sitting, heat, or exertion.
How We Evaluate POTS
Our evaluation focuses on how well the autonomic nervous system is regulating posture, circulation, and neurological input. Testing may include:
- Orthostatic vital sign assessment
- Balance and postural stability testing
- Eye movement and visual tracking evaluation
- Autonomic nervous system screening
- Sensory and motor integration testing
- Gait and coordination assessment
This allows us to identify which neurological systems are contributing to dysregulation and how they can be supported.
Our Chiropractic and Functional Neurology Approach
Rather than focusing only on symptoms, we work to support the neurological systems involved in autonomic regulation. Your personalized care plan may include:
- Autonomic nervous system regulation strategies
- Vestibular and balance rehabilitation
- Visual and oculomotor training
- Sensorimotor integration exercises
- Gentle chiropractic care when appropriate
- Postural and proprioceptive retraining
- Nervous system calming techniques
- Lifestyle guidance to support neurological stability
All care is customized to your tolerance level and progressed gradually.
Why This Approach Helps POTS
Many individuals with POTS are told there is little that can be done beyond symptom management. Functional Neurology offers a different perspective by addressing how the brain and nervous system regulate the body.
Our approach is:
- Drug free and noninvasive
- Focused on nervous system function
- Based on objective neurological testing
- Individualized and adaptable
- Designed to improve regulation and resilience
We often work with patients who feel dismissed or stuck and help them build better tolerance and control over time.
Living Better With POTS
POTS can be frustrating and exhausting, but improvement is possible with the right support. By addressing nervous system regulation, posture, balance, and sensory integration, many patients experience better stability, reduced symptoms, and improved daily function.
Our goal is to help you regain confidence in your body and improve your quality of life.
