Trigger points are small, tight knots that develop in muscle tissue and can cause pain when activated. Trigger Point Therapy applies pressure to these trigger points, breaking up adhesions in the muscles and releasing tension which helps promote healing and relaxation.
Trigger point therapy is a type of massage therapy that focuses on the treatment of trigger points, which are areas of tightness and tension in the muscle tissue. These trigger points can cause pain and discomfort in other parts of the body and may be caused by a variety of factors, including muscle strain, repetitive use, or injury. During a trigger point therapy session, the therapist will apply pressure to the trigger points using their fingers, palms, or elbows in order to release the tension and reduce pain. The therapist may also stretch the muscle and use other techniques to improve mobility and reduce discomfort. Trigger point therapy is often used in conjunction with other massage techniques and may be effective in relieving chronic pain and improving overall muscle function.
What is a “Trigger Point”?
A trigger point is a small, tender area within a muscle that can cause pain in other parts of the body. These points are often referred to as “knots” because they can feel like small, hard lumps in the muscle tissue. Trigger points can be caused by a variety of factors, including muscle strain, repetitive use, or injury. They can also be the result of emotional stress or poor posture. When a trigger point is present, it can cause discomfort or pain in the area directly surrounding the trigger point, as well as in other areas of the body. For example, a trigger point in the upper back might cause pain in the neck or shoulders. Trigger points can be sensitive to the touch and may cause discomfort or pain when pressure is applied to them.
What does Trigger Point Therapy Treat?
Here are some common reasons why someone might consider seeking trigger point therapy:
Chronic muscle pain: Trigger point therapy can be effective in relieving chronic muscle pain caused by trigger points.
Poor posture: Poor posture can cause trigger points to form, and trigger point therapy can help to relieve the resulting muscle tension and discomfort.
Repetitive use injuries: People who perform the same movements repeatedly, such as athletes or those who work in physically demanding jobs, may develop trigger points due to the strain on their muscles. Trigger point therapy can help to reduce pain and improve muscle function.
Stress or tension: Emotional stress and tension can cause muscle tension, leading to the formation of trigger points. Trigger point therapy can help to release this tension and reduce discomfort.
Headaches: Some research suggests that trigger point therapy may be effective in reducing the frequency and intensity of headaches, including migraines.
Fibromyalgia: Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain condition that is often characterized by the presence of trigger points in the muscles. Trigger point therapy may be helpful in relieving pain and improving overall muscle function in people with fibromyalgia.
What to Expect During a Trigger Point Therapy Session
The length of a trigger point therapy session can vary depending on the specific needs and goals of the individual receiving treatment. In general, our trigger point therapy sessions at Sensoria Chiropractic may last anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. During this time, the therapist will work to identify and treat trigger points in the muscle tissue. This may involve applying pressure to the trigger points using their fingers, palms, or elbows, as well as stretching the muscle and using other techniques to improve mobility and reduce discomfort.
Some people may need more than one trigger point therapy session in order to achieve the desired results, while others may see improvement after just one session. It is important to discuss your specific needs and goals with your therapist in order to determine the appropriate length of treatment.

I had some neck and back pain and tension. After 1 month of consistent alignments, I am back to normal with no pain or discomfort at all. Will be back in the future for more realignments. Great staff, so kind and accommodating.
I cannot thank Dr. Shippy of Sensoria Chiropractic enough for the exceptional, kind, compassionate and professional care he has given to my seventeen year old Yorkie Cuthbert. Cuthbert was having difficulty walking because his back was arched causing his hind legs to be compromised. After just two visits and expert treatment from Dr. Shippy he is moving freely again and walking like a five year old. Thank you so much for giving my Cuthbert his health and movement back Dr. Shippy. I highly recommend Dr. Shippy for any problems your pet may have. He is the best!
Dr Shippy was fantastic with Gidget! And so professional… I think it totally helped her feel better. Being a 12 year old Lab isn’t easy and Dr Shippy identified issues we didn’t think of, it was a very productive visit.
Dr. Shippy is the absolute best! He’s been Milo’s (my Frenchie’s) chiropractor for the past two years, and Milo ABSOLUTELY loves him! He is so patient and gentle with Milo, especially because he can be a little wild. Dr. Shippy always works around his craziness to make sure he gets his back adjusted, and of course, there’s playtime afterwards! 🐾❤️
I started seeing Dr. Shippy myself back in February, and going every other week has made such a difference. I honestly wish I had started sooner! He’s incredibly knowledgeable, caring, and takes the time to really listen. I highly recommend Dr. Shippy, he’s amazing with both people and pets! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I had found no relief with my POTS symptoms, despite trying multiple doctors and various approaches for several years. After just 4-5 treatments from Dr. Shippy, I already felt such an improvement in my POTS symptoms. I am able to do more things now than I was before this treatment!
I took my daughter to Dr. Shippy for severe neck pain. He was very professional and did a thorough exam including xrays. He was very proficient with spinal adjustments. He also didn't hard sell a cookie cutter care plan as many chiropractors do. I have worked with quite a few local chiropractors since the late 90s, and I'm an advanced practice health care provider myself. I highly recommend Sensoria Chiropractic.
Dr. Shippy is great, he is knowledgeable & very professional! Yesterday was my 1st chiropractic appointment since 2020. After years of nursing my baby & going through the whole infant- toddler faze with my daughter had put my body out of alignment. As a yoga teacher I do many poses to help my alignment, but no pose could EVER do what Dr. Shippy was able to do. My right shoulder was higher than my left, causing jaw, neck, and shoulder discomfort. As well as my mid to lower back. Today I feel I have a better range of motion and am shifting in my seat less often. I can’t wait to come back to help my tilted pelvis. ( also the office is super sophisticated, I love the mood and furniture)
I was searching for an animal chiropractor for my 8yo doberman Luka. He was suffering from some kind of trauma to his neck and I was hoping Dr Shippy could help him. The first couple of times Luka was very nervous, as he had never had any spinal adjustments. Dr Shippy was very kind and VERY patient with him. His 3rd adjustment went very well and Luka has gone from a dog in a lot of pain, to a dog that can now play with his ‘siblings’ without fear of getting hurt. It’s been nothing short of a miracle for Luka, and I thank God I found a wonderful Dr for him. Dr Shippy genuinely cares for animals, you can clearly see that in how he treats them. I will continue to bring Luka to him whenever he needs a chiropractor!!! Thank you for all you have done for Luka, Dr Shippy!!
I highly recommend Dr. Shippy to anyone looking for an excellent chiropractor. When I first came to his office I was dealing with significant pain and very limited mobility. Something as simple as going down the stairs was extremely difficult for me. After working with Dr. Shippy my pain has decreased dramatically and my mobility has improved so much that I can now go down the stairs without any issues. I am even starting to get back into my exercise routine.<br><br>One thing that really stands out is how thorough and attentive he is. His intake process is very detailed and he spends real time understanding what is going on with your body. Unlike some places where you walk in, get a quick adjustment, and are out the door within a minute, Dr. Shippy truly takes the time to ask how you are doing and evaluate what actually needs attention that day.<br><br>He also offers a variety of treatments including laser therapy and a decompression machine, which makes a big difference in the level of care you receive. Every adjustment feels very intentional and purposeful. He is very intuitive and does not just adjust for the sake of adjusting.<br><br>Dr. Shippy is incredibly patient, professional, and accommodating with scheduling. His office has a welcoming and positive environment that makes every visit a great experience. I am very grateful for the progress I have made under his care and would highly recommend him to anyone looking to improve mobility and reduce pain.
